Melbourne, Victoria
Australia

After another ridiculous shift at The Sloaney Pony, my coworkers and I sat around the table sharing a knock off drink. With not much effort, one convinced me to put on my best Australian accent. Having lived here for months (and having downed a glass of wine on an empty stomach), I didn't hesitate to give them my best, "How ya' goin', mate?" (my favorite Australian expression). I sounded a bit how I imagine the troll in The Three Billy Goats Gruff to have sounded to the goats passing overhead.
Definitely not Australian. This prompted my Australian accent research.
I hope that you, like me, practiced with the video.
Bittersweet, the unintentional humor of this video.
But truly, there is great variance to the Australian accent; the same way we know there to be many versions of the American accent. I prefer the softer accent; like the one in the video. After traveling, I heard some that are so harsh and guttural you'd swear they were speaking another language. Seriously, at times we were reduced to spelling out each word just to be understood.
